Some of you driving in to Kansas City for the World Cup tournament may not be aware of the Kansas laws on Marijuana. On this date in 2026, it is still illegal to possession weed in Kansas. This means that if THC products are found on you or in your car, you will be charged with Possession of Mary Jane. But, the good news is that law enforcement no longer make an arrest for simple possession cases. So, you can expect ticket and are allowed to carry on with your day.
The next question is: what can I do to "get you out" of the charge? The normal process for out-of-towners is to either get a Diversion of the charge OR plead guilty to the charge and pay a fine and be done. The benefit of diversion is to have a 'dismissal' of the charge at the end of either 6 months or 12 months. But, you will be expected to complete a drug class and may have to drop random urine tests to see if you are still using weed. The other option is to simply plead Guilty to the charge and have a small fine to pay. Many choose this option so they can avoid the testing used in the diversion program and so they can carry on without any concerns about testing and checking in with probation.
You are welcome to call me for more discussion on the topic, but it really comes down to whether a simple "weed case" will affect your future employment opportunities.
